You, your kids, friends, family members, traffickers, buyers... everyone loves the INTERNET.
We spend hours surfing online every day, and for the same reasons: quick and easy access to information, to friends, to opportunities to share photos and stories.
We love its instant fun and the visibility of nice things we post.
lure their victim with dreams matching victim’s posts
snare their victims with promises too good to be true
have multiple files of children and vulnerable adults
lie about who they are and why they like you
accept bookings from buyers
all from the comfort of home.
Traffickers have every hour of the day for surfing, pinging, sending friend requests, chatting, gaming, sending praise, expressing condolences, lending a sympathetic ear to teens and then posting ads selling their victim once they have them under their control; all with the flick of the wrist.
The importance of having a “Trusted Adult” comes from human brain development.
Research tells us the frontal lobe, the decision-making area of the brain, is not fully developed until approximately 25-27 years of age. The most common ages targeted by traffickers for recruitment and grooming are between 12-20 years old, and especially from 15-17 years old.

Teens believe they are “ready for the world.” But they operate from the amygdala, the emotional part of the brain and, scientifically, they don’t yet have the capability of making sound decisions. This is why having a Trusted Adult in their lives is so crucial. When that adult is trained to recognize the signs of recruitment, sex trafficking and trauma, they are even more able to help.
Let your children know it is YOU who really cares for them and their well-being. Learn about, and then have open and honest conversations with your kids about, the dangers of sex trafficking and online predation.
Online predators are real. Encourage your kids to turn to their Trusted Adult when they encounter something that makes them feel uncomfortable, both in-person and online. Encourage them to do this before harm occurs.
Accepting the truth of these crimes, what they are, how, where, and to whom they happen, and what to watch for to avoid the traps, will help keep everyone safe.
