Research tells us the frontal lobe, the decision-making area of the brain, is not fully developed until approximately 25-27 years of age. The most common ages targeted by traffickers for recruitment and grooming are between 12-20 years old, and especially from 15-17 years old.

Teens believe they are “ready for the world.” But they operate from the amygdala, the emotional part of the brain and, scientifically, they don’t yet have the capability of making sound decisions. This is why having a Trusted Adult in their lives is so crucial. When that adult is trained to recognize the signs of recruitment, sex trafficking and trauma, they are even more able to help.
